Golden Kubestronaut: all 16 certifications, order and cost
By Ibrahim Yesilay · Published · Updated
Golden Kubestronaut is the CNCF title for people who have passed all 16 certifications in the program: the five Kubestronaut core exams plus LFCS and ten more cloud native exams. 10 are multiple-choice and 6 are hands-on. This page lists every exam, the official bundle prices, a study order and a realistic time range.

What Golden Kubestronaut is
Golden Kubestronaut is a Cloud Native Computing Foundation recognition awarded through the Linux Foundation. The program page defines it as individuals who have successfully passed every CNCF certification and the LFCS, covering 16 listed certifications that include CNPA and CNPE. It builds on the Kubestronaut title, which covers the five Kubernetes certifications CKA, CKAD, CKS, KCNA and KCSA. The bundle page words the requirement as "passing every required CNCF certification along with LFCS" and adds that new CNCF certifications may be added to the requirements over time.
The program is run by the Linux Foundation and the CNCF, not by GoldenKube. GoldenKube is an independent practice site; it does not sell exams, award titles or speak for either organization. Everything on this page about rules and prices is copied from the two official Linux Foundation pages listed under the sources, as read on 23 October 2026.
Two requirements were added after the program started. The official pages state that CNPA became a requirement starting 15 October 2025, and that CNPE became a requirement starting 1 March 2026. That is why older articles that mention fourteen or fifteen certifications are out of date: the current list has sixteen.
Because the rule says new certifications may be added, treat the number sixteen as correct for the check date rather than permanent. If the Linux Foundation adds an exam, the official program page changes first, and this page is updated after it is re-read.
The full list of 16 certifications
The sixteen certifications are CKA, CKAD, CKS, LFCS, CNPE, KCNA, KCSA, PCA, ICA, CCA, CAPA, CGOA, CBA, OTCA, KCA and CNPA. Ten of them are multiple-choice exams and six are hands-on exams taken in a live command-line environment. Five belong to the Kubestronaut core: CKA, CKAD, CKS, KCNA and KCSA. The other eleven are the additional Golden requirements. The table below lists each one with its exam format, tier and the date it became required where the official pages state one.
Each certification has its own page on this site with its domains, exam facts and practice status; the links are at the bottom of this page. The official exam pages remain the only authority for registration, curriculum and policy.
| # | Certification | Exam format | Tier | Required since |

How the title is awarded
The title is earned by passing every certification on the required list. There is no separate Golden Kubestronaut exam: the official bundle page describes the title as earned by passing every required CNCF certification along with LFCS, and the program page lists the sixteen exams. The pages we read do not describe a time limit for completing the set, or how a claim is submitted. Because those details are not on the pages we verified, we do not state them here; the official program page is where the claim process and any deadline are published.
Each exam is purchased and scheduled separately, or as part of a bundle. The Linux Foundation lists 2 years of certification validity on every individual exam page, so the practical question for a long program is when each certification will lapse relative to the others. The official pages we read do not say whether the certifications must all be valid at the same moment; confirm that on the program page before you plan the order around it.
Passing an exam and holding the title are separate things on the benefits side too: the official benefits list ties the THRIVE-ONE subscription to keeping the Kubestronaut title maintained.
Kubestronaut compared with Golden Kubestronaut
Kubestronaut requires five certifications, all Kubernetes: CKA, CKAD, CKS, KCNA and KCSA. Golden Kubestronaut requires sixteen: those five plus LFCS, CNPE and nine associate-level exams covering Prometheus, Istio, Cilium, Argo, GitOps, Backstage, OpenTelemetry, Kyverno and platform engineering. The Kubestronaut bundle costs $1,645 and the Golden bundle $4,229, and there is an upgrade bundle from Kubestronaut to Golden at $2,669. Each title carries its own benefits list.
The Kubestronaut title is therefore a stepping stone: every Kubestronaut certification also counts toward Golden. Holders of Kubestronaut do not start Golden from zero; they need the eleven others.
| Kubestronaut | Golden Kubestronaut | |
|---|---|---|
| Certifications required | 5 (CKA, CKAD, CKS, KCNA, KCSA) | 16 (the five plus LFCS, CNPE and nine more) |
| Exam mix | 3 hands-on, 2 multiple-choice | 6 hands-on, 10 multiple-choice |
| Official bundle | $1,645 | $4,229 |
| Upgrade bundle | CKA or CKAD to Kubestronaut: $1,235 | Kubestronaut to Golden: $2,669 |
| Sum of individual list prices | $1,835 | $4,975 |
Suggested study order
Our suggested order starts with the two entry-level Kubernetes exams, KCNA and KCSA, then builds the Linux and Kubernetes hands-on core with LFCS, CKA, CKAD and CKS, then moves through observability, delivery, networking and platform engineering, ending with CNPE because it is the broadest hands-on exam. CKS has an official prerequisite of a passed CKA, which fixes one dependency. The rest of the order is our recommendation based on how topics build on each other; it is not an official sequence. The full ordered path with a reason for every step is on the order page.
Order matters less than people expect, because ten of the sixteen exams are multiple-choice associate exams that do not depend on each other. Where it matters is the hands-on core: command-line speed from LFCS carries into CKA, and CKA is both a prerequisite for CKS and the base that CKAD and CNPE lean on.
If you already hold some of the certifications, keep your own order and fill the gaps. The order page explains where each step sits and why, so you can move a step without breaking its dependencies.
What it costs
On the check date the Linux Foundation lists the Golden Kubestronaut bundle at $4,229, the Kubestronaut bundle at $1,645, and the Kubestronaut-to-Golden upgrade bundle at $2,669. Buying the sixteen exams one by one at the list prices on each exam page adds up to $4,975: five hands-on exams at $445 and eleven at $250. The bundle is therefore $746 cheaper than buying individually, before any promotion.
Those figures are list prices as read on 23 October 2026. The Linux Foundation runs promotions and the bundle page showed a discount banner without an end date, so check the checkout price before you buy. The cost page works through the arithmetic for every starting point: bundle against individual exams, upgrade paths, retakes and the two-year validity.
How long it takes
Exam seat time is the only fixed number: the sixteen exams add up to 27.5 hours (1650 minutes), counting the listed duration of every exam. Preparation time is an estimate and depends on your background. For planning, a reasonable range is 2 to 6 weeks of part-time study per multiple-choice exam and 6 to 12 weeks per hands-on exam. Across 10 multiple-choice and 6 hands-on exams, that is roughly 56 to 132 study weeks done strictly one after another, fewer if you overlap related exams.
Treat those ranges as our estimates, not Linux Foundation figures and not averages measured from users. Someone who already runs Kubernetes in production will sit the Kubernetes exams at the low end; someone new to the Linux command line will need the high end for LFCS and CKA.
You can size the multiple-choice side from the GoldenKube banks. As of the check date the nine banks hold 2,065 questions (from 40 for the smallest to 543 for the largest). Reading each question and its explanation takes roughly one to two minutes, so working through every question once is about 34 to 69 hours across all nine, before repeating the ones you miss. That is an estimate from those counts and the one-to-two-minute assumption.
Benefits of the titles
The Linux Foundation lists separate benefits for each title. Golden Kubestronaut holders get an exclusive backpack with the Golden logo, a Golden Kubestronaut beanie, a THRIVE-ONE subscription for as long as the Kubestronaut title is maintained, one free Kubernetes Community Days ticket per year, one 50%-off KubeCon registration per year, a 60% discount voucher for each new CNCF certification, and a distinguished Golden representation on the Kubestronaut website. Kubestronaut holders get a jacket, a Credly badge, a private Slack channel and mailing list, five 50%-off certification coupons a year, and 20% off three CNCF events a year.
These lists are quoted from the program page as read on the check date. Benefits can change, and eligibility rules are the Linux Foundation's to state. GoldenKube cannot confirm or grant any of them.
Multiple-choice and hands-on exams
Ten of the sixteen exams are multiple-choice and six are hands-on. On the Linux Foundation pages, nine multiple-choice exams run 60 questions in 90 minutes with a 75% passing score, and CNPA is the documented exception with 85 questions in 120 minutes. The hands-on exams (CKA, CKAD, CKS, LFCS, ICA and CNPE) run 120 minutes of performance-based tasks in a command-line environment, with passing scores from 64% to 68% depending on the exam. The table gives every exam's published numbers.
The practical difference is how you practise. Multiple-choice exams reward reading, recall and elimination, which suits question banks. Hands-on exams reward speed and accuracy at a terminal, which needs a real cluster or lab. ICA is listed as having both performance-based and multiple-choice delivery on its page.
| Exam | Format | Questions or tasks | Minutes | Passing score | List price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CKA | Hands-on | 15-20 performance-based tasks | 120 | 66% | $445 |
| CKAD | Hands-on | 15-20 performance-based tasks | 120 | 66% | $445 |
| CKS | Hands-on | 15-20 performance-based tasks | 120 | 67% | $445 |
| KCNA | Multiple-choice | 60 | 90 | 75% | $250 |
| KCSA | Multiple-choice | 60 | 90 | 75% | $250 |
| LFCS | Hands-on | 17-20 performance-based tasks | 120 | 67% | $445 |
| PCA | Multiple-choice | 60 | 90 | 75% | $250 |
| ICA | Hands-on | 15-20 performance-based tasks | 120 | 68% | $250 |
| CCA | Multiple-choice | 60 | 90 | 75% | $250 |
| CAPA | Multiple-choice | 60 | 90 | 75% | $250 |
| CGOA | Multiple-choice | 60 | 90 | 75% | $250 |
| CBA | Multiple-choice | 60 | 90 | 75% | $250 |
| OTCA | Multiple-choice | 60 | 90 | 75% | $250 |
| KCA | Multiple-choice | 60 | 90 | 75% | $250 |
| CNPA | Multiple-choice | 85 | 120 | 75% | $250 |
| CNPE | Hands-on | 15-20 performance-based tasks | 120 | 64% | $445 |
What GoldenKube covers today
GoldenKube is a free practice site. Of the sixteen exams, 9 have a live question bank, 6 hands-on exams are marked as labs planned, and 1 (CNPA) has its question bank coming. That means the associate-level multiple-choice side of the program can be practised today, while the hands-on side needs another practice environment until labs exist. You get 10 free guest answers, then a free account; no credit card is needed.
GoldenKube is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the CNCF or the Linux Foundation. Practice questions are original study material, not exam content, and passing them does not guarantee a pass on the real exam.
