Kustomize overlay for production

Scenario ckad-dep-004 · about 8 minutes · 9 points · 9 grader checks

Write a Kustomize overlay that changes namespace, names, labels, replicas and image of an existing base, then apply it.

  • overlay
  • deployment
  • labels

What you will practise

  • Reference a base from an overlay kustomization.yaml
  • Use namespace, namePrefix, labels, replicas and images transformers
  • Render with kubectl kustomize and apply with kubectl apply -k

Start this lab

With the CLI installed and signed in, this command provisions a single node cluster on your Mac, applies the scenario setup and prints the task below.

goldenkube start ckad-dep-004

Task

The task text exactly as the CLI shows it. Solve it on the cluster, then run goldenkube submit.

On the control plane node exam-cp1 a Kustomize base for the application "catalog" exists in /opt/kustomize/base (a Deployment and a Service, both named "catalog", image nginx:1.26, 1 replica). The namespace "kustom" exists. Create a production overlay in /opt/kustomize/overlays/prod (file kustomization.yaml) that uses the base and: - puts every object into the namespace "kustom" - prefixes every object name with "prod-" - adds the label env=prod to every object, its pod template and its selectors - runs 3 replicas of the Deployment - uses the image nginx:1.27 instead of nginx:1.26 Do not edit the files of the base. Apply the overlay to the cluster with kubectl. The Deployment must have 3 Ready replicas and the Service must route to them.
