CGOA vs CAPA: which certification should you take first?
By Ibrahim Yesilay · Published · Updated
CGOA tests GitOps as a discipline: terminology, principles, patterns and tooling. CAPA tests the Argo projects: Workflows, CD, Rollouts and Events. Both are multiple-choice Golden Kubestronaut requirements with no listed prerequisite. CGOA gives the concepts; CAPA gives one concrete toolset, so many people take CGOA first.

How CGOA and CAPA differ
CGOA (Certified GitOps Associate) is a multiple-choice exam in the Golden requirement group of the Golden Kubestronaut program, and CAPA (Certified Argo Project Associate) is a multiple-choice exam in the Golden requirement group. Both use the same exam style, so the real difference is subject matter rather than how you are tested. CGOA: Multiple-choice exam on GitOps terminology, principles, related practices, patterns and tooling. CAPA: Multiple-choice exam on the Argo projects: Workflows, CD, Rollouts and Events. The table above sets format, questions, duration, passing score, price, validity, prerequisites and the number of domains side by side, each value read from the official Linux Foundation pages and dated.
Because both are multiple-choice, the study method is the same for either one: learn the concepts, then check yourself with questions that explain why each answer is right or wrong.
What CGOA and CAPA cover
CGOA is organised into 5 domains and CAPA into 4. The heaviest CGOA domain is GitOps Principles (30%), while the heaviest CAPA domain is Argo Workflows (36%). Domain weights come straight from each official certification page and show where the Linux Foundation expects most of your preparation time to go. If your own work sits mainly in one heavy domain of an exam, that exam will feel closer to your daily job; if the heavy domains are unfamiliar, plan more study time for that exam. The lists below give every domain with its weight, checked against the official pages on the date shown at the top of this page.
- CGOA: GitOps Terminology, 20% of the exam
- CGOA: GitOps Principles, 30% of the exam
- CGOA: Related Practices, 16% of the exam
- CGOA: GitOps Patterns, 20% of the exam
- CGOA: Tooling, 14% of the exam
- CAPA: Argo Workflows, 36% of the exam
- CAPA: ARGO CD, 34% of the exam
- CAPA: Argo Rollouts, 18% of the exam
- CAPA: Argo Events, 12% of the exam
Who should take CGOA
CGOA suits anyone who delivers software through Git-driven workflows, whichever tool they use. It covers GitOps terminology, principles, related practices, patterns and tooling, so it rewards understanding why declarative state, versioned configuration and continuous reconciliation matter. It fits platform engineers, release engineers and developers who want the ideas behind the tools. CGOA is a multiple-choice exam with 5 domains, led by GitOps Principles (30%), and it sits in the Golden requirement group of the program. The table above gives its questions, duration, passing score, price and validity with their sources. Choosing is easier when you compare the domain list with the work you actually did in the last month, and the official certification page remains the place to confirm the current curriculum before you book.
- You want the principles behind GitOps, not one product.
- You compare tools such as Argo CD and Flux and want a neutral foundation.
- You design delivery workflows for several teams.
- You prefer to learn concepts before tool details.
Who should take CAPA
CAPA suits people who use or will use the Argo projects. It covers Argo Workflows, Argo CD, Argo Rollouts and Argo Events, so it is tool-specific and rewards familiarity with how those components are configured and how they work together. It fits engineers who run Argo in production or are adopting it for delivery and automation. CAPA is a multiple-choice exam with 4 domains, led by Argo Workflows (36%), and it sits in the Golden requirement group of the program. The table above gives its questions, duration, passing score, price and validity with their sources. Choosing is easier when you compare the domain list with the work you actually did in the last month, and the official certification page remains the place to confirm the current curriculum before you book.
- Argo CD or Argo Workflows is part of your delivery stack.
- You use Rollouts for progressive delivery or Events for triggers.
- You want to show practical familiarity with the Argo family.
- You already know GitOps ideas and need the product detail.
Can you take both, and in which order?
You can take both; both are required for Golden Kubestronaut and the Linux Foundation lists no prerequisite for either. Taking CGOA first is a natural order because Argo CD is one implementation of the GitOps ideas CGOA describes, so CAPA makes more sense once the principles are clear. If you already run Argo daily, starting with CAPA is equally reasonable. Prerequisites as published by the Linux Foundation: CGOA: None. CAPA: None. Each is listed as its own certification in the program, so passing one never counts toward the other. Whichever you choose first, book the exam only when you can answer questions across every domain, not just the heaviest one.
Since both have live question banks on GoldenKube, you can study them in parallel: when a CAPA question mentions reconciliation or desired state, the matching CGOA domain explains the principle behind it.
How GoldenKube helps with CGOA and CAPA
GoldenKube is a free practice app for the multiple-choice certifications in the Golden Kubestronaut program. CGOA has a live GoldenKube question bank: every question comes with an explanation, you get instant feedback, and questions you miss come back for review until you have mastered them. CAPA has a live GoldenKube question bank: every question comes with an explanation, you get instant feedback, and questions you miss come back for review until you have mastered them. You get 10 free guest answers, then a free account; no credit card is needed. Practice does not replace the official curriculum, and passing practice questions does not guarantee a pass on the real exam.
Both banks are live, so you can practise the concept exam and the tool exam side by side and use domain focus to stay on one area at a time.
Verdict: CGOA or CAPA first?
Take CGOA first for the concepts and CAPA next for the Argo toolset, unless Argo is already your daily tool, in which case CAPA first is fine. Both are multiple-choice, both are required for Golden Kubestronaut, and the shared GitOps ideas make the second exam easier.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between CGOA and CAPA?
CGOA covers GitOps as a discipline: terminology, principles, patterns and tooling. CAPA covers four specific Argo projects: Workflows, CD, Rollouts and Events. One is conceptual and tool-neutral, the other is tool-specific.
Should I take CGOA before CAPA?
It is a sensible order because Argo CD implements the ideas CGOA explains, but it is not required. The Linux Foundation lists no prerequisite for either exam.
Do I need Argo experience for CGOA?
No. CGOA is about GitOps principles and tooling in general. Argo knowledge helps but is not the focus of the exam.
Are both required for Golden Kubestronaut?
Yes. CGOA and CAPA are both in the program, and Golden Kubestronaut requires every certification on the list.
Can I practise both on GoldenKube?
Yes. Both are multiple-choice with live question banks and explanations. You get 10 free guest answers, then a free account; no credit card is needed.
Which exam covers Flux?
Check the official CGOA curriculum for the current scope of tooling. CAPA covers only the Argo projects, so Flux is not part of it.
