Operators: run Alertmanager through the Prometheus Operator

Scenario cnpe-api-003 · about 15 minutes · 8 points · 5 grader checks

Use the Prometheus Operator as a platform automation: declare an Alertmanager and a namespaced AlertmanagerConfig, and confirm the operator reconciled them into a running, configured instance.

What you will practise

  • Drive an operator through its custom resources
  • Select AlertmanagerConfig objects with a label selector
  • Verify what the operator generated (StatefulSet, Service, live config)

Start this lab

With the CLI installed and signed in, this command provisions a single node cluster on your Mac, applies the scenario setup and prints the task below.

goldenkube start cnpe-api-003

Task

The task text exactly as the CLI shows it. Solve it on the cluster, then run goldenkube submit.

The Prometheus Operator runs in namespace "monitoring" and watches all namespaces. 1. Create an Alertmanager "main" in "monitoring" with 1 replica, the image quay.io/prometheus/alertmanager:v0.34.1, a memory request of 64Mi, and an alertmanagerConfigSelector that selects AlertmanagerConfig objects labelled alertmanagerConfig=main. 2. Create an AlertmanagerConfig "team-routes" in "monitoring" with that label: a route to the receiver "team-null" grouped by alertname, and the receiver "team-null" without any integration. 3. The operator must reconcile both: the Alertmanager StatefulSet is ready and the running Alertmanager has the "team-null" receiver loaded.

Self-service namespaces: Kyverno generate rules for team onboarding

A team gets a working namespace by labelling it: a Kyverno ClusterPolicy generates the quota and the admin RoleBinding for every namespace carrying the team label and keeps them in sync.
