Drain a node for maintenance

Scenario cka-arc-006 · about 7 minutes · 7 points · 4 grader checks

Safely take a worker node out of service by cordoning it and evicting its workload pods without deleting the node.

  • maintenance
  • eviction

What you will practise

  • Cordon a node
  • Evict workloads with kubectl drain
  • Handle DaemonSet-managed pods during a drain

Start this lab

With the CLI installed and signed in, this command provisions a two nodes cluster on your Mac, applies the scenario setup and prints the task below.

goldenkube start cka-arc-006

Task

The task text exactly as the CLI shows it. Solve it on the cluster, then run goldenkube submit.

Node "exam-w1" needs maintenance. Safely take it out of service: - mark it unschedulable, and - evict all regular workload pods from it (DaemonSet-managed pods must be left alone). Do not delete the node. Pods managed by controllers must be rescheduled elsewhere by the cluster; there is a Deployment "maint-app" in namespace "default" to observe this.

Grading runs locally: 4 state checks read your cluster when you submit; the scenario passes when every check passes. Hints, the reference solution and the check definitions are available only inside the CLI, not on this page.
